Job Description

South African Breweries (SAB) is searching for driven and creative individuals who have a passion for creating the best beers. Whether you’re putting a fresh spin on existing recipes or crafting the perfect seasonal or specialty brew, you understand that quality comes first.

The Junior Brewer esponsibilities include cleaning tanks and other equipment used in the brewing process, selecting ingredients, crafting recipes, and testing the product.

Brewmasters will also need to be able to manage team members, build rapport with suppliers, keep accurate records, and complete necessary paperwork.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • The role follows from a formal full time traineeship or parallel traineeship
  • Through zone interaction, the BAM & BTE coach the Junior Brewers through their development
  • During the employment as a Junior Brewer, the development will include a validation of progress and performance by a panel consisting of Brewing L&D
  • Coordinator, Zone B&Q Leadership and representative Brewing Manager/s. This should be managed through the brewery, ZBQ and L&D
  • Owns the plan for personal development based on experiential learning

The Junior Brewer must own the plan for his/her development with specific reference to:

  • Acting roles with agreed learning outcomes by the employee, the direct line manager, Zone coordinators and Zone L&D specialists
  • Selection and planning (with zone and line manager approval) of a Key KPI improvement project, and/or appropriate Implementation Project
  • Fully integrates into the brewing department/ respective acting departments throughout employment as a Junior Brewer, with full exposure to leadership levels within the department

Desired Experience & Qualification

  • B.Sc. Degree or equivalent in Biological Sciences, Chemistry or Chemical Engineering
  • Completed Traineeship, Checked out brewer
  • Completed brewing technical traineeship pathway and checkout

Note: this role is filled only by trainees who have checked out on the traineeship pathway Desirable but not essential:

Master Brewer IBD qualification obtained

  • Additional business qualification
  • Belt certification would be highly advantageous
